Cut off the 2 ends of the onions and peel te skin off. This is my preferred method. However some people prefer slice the onions before removing the skin.
Slice onions into ½ inch to ¾ inch thick rings then separate the rings. Depending on how study the rings are, it’s ok to keep two rings together.
Wrap each onion ring with bacon. Let bacon overlap slightly as you wrap the onion. For Large onion rings you will need 2 bacon slices for medium rings, roughly 1½ slices is needed. It’s ok to secure with tooth picks if necessary.
Brush with maple syrup and Pepper flakes (if using). Transfer glazed bacon onions to the air fryer basket and cook at 390°F for 10 mins, flipping halfway through. Feel free to add a couple of minutes if the bacon isn’t crispy to your liking.
What to serve with this bacon appetizer
These appetizing bacon wrapped onion rings pair well with tangy dipping sauces and creamy dips. Think Ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, hot sauce, honey mustard and barbecue sauce.
Like our air fryer frozen onion rings, these are all tasty dips to serve with this bacon wrapped version.
For a lighter option, whip up a yogurt or sour cream based dip with fresh herbs and spices.
How to store and reheat
Let any leftover onion rings cool completely then store in an airtight container and refrigerate up to 3-5 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 365°F for about 5 minutes until warmed through and the bacon is crispy again. They can also be reheated in the oven at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
Air frying Tips
- No need to preheat
- Choose firm, dense onions that can hold up to frying. Sweet onions like Vidalia work great.
- Pat the onion rings dry before wrapping to help the bacon adhere.
- Make sure bacon is stretched tight around onion without gaps. Toothpicks can secure if needed.
- Watch closely halfway through cooking to flip rings and ensure even browning.
- If reheating precooked rings, air fry just until hot to keep bacon crisp.

Peel onion then slice crosswise into rounds about ½ inch thick.
About ½ inch to ¾ inch thickness is ideal so they hold their shape when wrapped and fried. Much thinner and they may fall apart.
It takes about 12 minutes at 390°F or 400°F making sure to flip halfway during cooking. Watch closely near the end to avoid burning.
Yes, bacon onion rings bake well too. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 20 to 25 mins, halfway through. Add more time if needed.
Regular sliced bacon is preferred as it’s the easiest to wrap. Thicker cut bacon won’t wrap as neatly and would take longer to cook.

Air fryer bacon wrapped onion rings
Ingredients
- 1 lb bacon
- 2 large onions
- 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
- ¼ cup maple syrup (I used a sugar free version)
Instructions
Onions:
- Cut off both ends of the onions and peel off the skin. Alternatively, some people prefer to slice the onions before removing the skin.
- Slice onions into ½ to ¾ inch thick rings, separating the rings. It's okay if 2 thinner rings stick together.
Wrapping and Cooking
- Wrap each onion ring with a slice of bacon, overlapping the bacon slightly. For large rings, use 2 bacon slices. For medium rings, use approximately 1 ½ bacon slices. Toothpicks can secure the bacon if needed.
- Brush the bacon-wrapped rings lightly with maple syrup and pepper flakes (optional).
- Place the wrapped onion rings in the air fryer basket and cook at 390°F for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Add 2-3 minutes more if the bacon isn't crisp enough.
