Marie Callender’s Chicken pot pie in air fryer
This is one of those indulgences we all agree on getting whenever we go grocery shopping at Costco’s. It’s an filling meal to have as soon as we get back from the store while we prepare for dinner.
These get ready in 5 to 6 minutes in the microwave if you are super hungry but if you are looking to enjoy some nice flakey crust, the air fryer is the way forward.
It may take a longer time in the air fryer than in the microwave but it takes way less time than in the oven.
Between! If you are wanting to make chicken pot pie from scratch, you should try this 3 ingredient pie crust. It’s super easy to make.
Why you’ll love this recipe
- Reheating has never been easier (well except for the microwave which has it’s own pros and cons)
- This is super easy and definitely falls under the easy air fryer recipes for beginners category.
- No need to turn on your oven and heat up the house especially during the summer.

How long to cook a frozen pot pie in the air fryer (Beef or chicken)
This will depend on the temperature at which you are cooking it and the size of the pot pies. You notice in the section where I talk about brands, they all come in different sizes ranging from 7oz to 16oz.
The Marie Callender’s we cook comes in 10oz sizes and takes approximately 25 mins to cook in the air fryer.
Storage instructions
I won’t recommend reheating these and storing for later. It’s best you reheat the amount you need at each time and serve immediately.
Air frying Tips
- Air fryer temperatures may vary depending on size, make and model. When making a recipe for the first time, start with less time, check for doneness then add more time as needed.
- Cover top of pot pie with foil to prevent the crust from over cooking before the inside gets the chance to heat up.
- If you want to speed things up you can pop these in the microwave for 5 mins and then crisp up the crust in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes.
- When it’s frozen rock solid, it may take up to 5 mins more than stated in the recipe. You can also microwave for 5 mins to defrost a bit before air frying.
- Do you want the bottom crust crispy too? Here’s what to do. Before removing the foil, flip the pot pie over so it’s up side down, let it cook for 3 minutes then flip it back right side up, remove the foil and cook for the 5 mins required to crisp up the top crust.

Do you have to preheat the af first?
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Jackie!
I did not preheat.
Jan says
Hi If the pies come in a foil case, do you take this off before cooking and also when you want the bottom to be well done. ? Thank you.
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Jan,
You don’t need to take off off the foil to cook it since you can cook with foil in most air fryers. The only thing is that the foil needs to be weighted down with food which in the this case it is.
If you want the bottom well done, I’ve heard people say they turn it over for a few minutes after the top has been cooked so that the bottom crisps up as well. However, I haven’t tried this. Hope this helps.

Great Great recipe!! I'm old and a pot pie nut!
I hate to crank up the oven for just me (I'm the only pot pie nut) and I usually get fussed at by the boss!
You've given my pot pies their freedom to be eaten!
Thanks, Jim

Such a pleasant comment with some humor! Thank you Jim. Happy you found this helpful. Enjoy
Paula says
I followed directions to the letter. I had to add 9 more min after 3 min in microwave, then 20 minutes with foil, the 6 without foil. It still was not 165 degrees internal temperature. I'm using emeril's 360 air fryer and marie calllander 10 oz. Chicken pot pie.
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Paula,
Sorry this didn’t work out for you. Happy to help you troubleshoot. The instructions stated to cook at 400°F /200°C not 360°F. Perhaps you’ll need to cook for longer. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by.
Dale says
Can you leave tin foil pans on meat pies homemade in AF they are already cooked.
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Dale,
Which brand of air fryer do you have? Most air fryers allow the use of foil. Therefore, i believe a foil plate is fine.
You should be able to reheat your homemade pot pie in the air fryer. You can confirm from your manual to know what it says about the use of foil
Wendy says
Can you warm up a chicken pot pie that has already been cooked & than frozen?
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Wendy,
Yes you can. I recommend you nuke it a bit in the air fryer if it’s frozen Rock solid. Then cover the top with foil and air fryer like was done for this one follow the rest of the instructions. Be mindful of size. Smaller pot pies will reheat faster.
Cae54 says
Pot pie was still totally frozen inside after 20 mins in foil and 10 mins without at 400 degreeaa. I just put foil over the top and it's back in the fryer, probably for at least 15 more minutes. Not sure why it didn't work for me!
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Cae54,
Sorry it didn’t work out for you. This works for us every time. Thank you for letting me know. I am happy to troubleshoot with you.
1. First thing to know is, air fryers cook differently depending on Brand so adding more time isn’t a bad thing. May I ask the size and brand of air fryer you used.
2. Also for same reason above, air fryer recipes like all recipes are guides. You may need to add more time or cook for less time.
3. It may be more difficult to cook these in the air fryer when they are rock solid from the freezer cos they are not rock solid when you buy them from the grocery store. If you are getting these out of your home freezer, it’s likely to be Rock solid. You could nuke the pot pie for up to 5 mins in the microwave before air frying or cook for longer in the air fryer if you don’t want to use the microwave at all. Hope this helps.
Marsha says
Do you need to take the pot pie out of the paper “pie tin”???
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Marsha,
You don’t need to. Thanks.
Eugene says
What size was the pie 8oz or 15oz
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Eugene,
The Marie Callender’s we buy from Costco are usually 10oz.
Charlotte says
Oh my God! What a time saver, and so good! I'm a single senior and love pot pies but hate to heat up the oven for one pie, and detest them in microwave. I had a banquet one in my freezer I had kept putting off making. I got the air fryer for Christmas. Thank you so much for the "recipe" and tips. I took the pie out of the paper container as wasn't sure if it would be ok in fryer. I just put the frozen pie in basket without any foil as was out of it. It actually turned out wonderful..did drip a very small amount into the basket but not enough to bother anything. Mine is a small one and very easy to clean anyway. It turned out so crisp and nice and done. Been below zero here in north Dakota, so it was so nice to have such a comfort food like this 🙂
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Charlotte!
Yayyy!! Your comment made me smile, so happy you found the tips helpful and that the food gave you some comfort in such a cold weather. Thank you for letting me know. Stay warm!
Joel says
I follow the instructions for your recipe from start to finish several times. I ended up with several pot pies that were burnt to a crisp on the top and frozen solid in the middle still. The recipe was attempted 7 times. Please also be sure to include what brand of air fryer you are using in your recipes. I found it is a major factor that directly impacts how your food turns out.
Air Fryer Yum says
Hi Joel,
Sorry this happened to you. For this recipe I used the Cosori air fryer. I also mentioned that if your pot pie is frozen rock solid it would be best to pop into that microwave first to defrost it a bit before air frying. If you don’t do that, it will take longer than is stated in this recipe. In that case, keep the foil on for longer. Hope that helps.
May I ask what brand of air fryer you have.
Dball says
I agree wholeheartedly with Charlotte; Thank you for publishing these instructions I haven't baked it yet but I'm confident it will work since my fried okra was a hit. MOST APPRECIATIVE!
Air Fryer Yum says
You are welcome Dbali!
Happy to hear this!
